Songs of Wit and Humor (more wit than wisdom)

A cabaret style performance which features four gifted singers supported by a fantastic jazz trio with narrative commentary throughout by the director, Charlotte Kaufman. Poisoning Pigeons in the Park (a song by Tom Lehrer) explores the many Come laugh, come learn, come have a good time different forms of satire and humor: just plain funny, serious, acerbic, outrageous, social, political – you name it, and you will probably find it in this program. Featured composers are Tom Lehrer, William Bolcom, Dave Frishberg, George Gershwin and Flanders and Swann, and some great songs by the contemporary master of satire, Stephen Sondheim, plus, plus… we don’t want to tell you everything!!

Performed by the same group who thrilled you with We’ll Meet Again – the Music of World War II; Jazz, An American Invention; I’ll Be Seeing You; Shaking the Blues Away: The Music of Tin Pan Alley; Fly Me to the Moon; Thou Swell Thou Witty; The Fabulous Fifties; Johnny Mercer’s 100th Birthday Party; Even More Fabulous 50s; and More or Loesser – all at the NHM.

CD recordings of BMT programs will be available for sale at all performances.

“You won’t find a trace of Eminem or Kanye West in “Thou Swell Thou Witty – A Celebration of Lyrics and Lyricists of the American Songbook.”

Staged by Boston Musical Theater on Sunday afternoon at the Academy of Music in Northampton, the cabaret style performance pays homage to the wordsmiths, some of whom such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin wrote both the music and lyric for their songs. Other such as lyricist Larry Hart crafted his words to fit Richard Rodgers’ tunes just as Ira Gershwin did for George.

“Compared to the music many listen to today which is hardly poetry with one sentence repeated a million times over with a little cadence every now and then, the music we will be performing is clever, intelligent and witty,” said director Charlotte Kaufman who conceived the show with Ron Stillman.

Showtime is 2 p.m.

The brilliant and poetic lyrics of the American Songbook, also known as “standards,” belong to a unique period which began in the 1920s when both the music and the words enjoyed equal importance. The Songbook was a synthesis of Broadway musical theater, Hollywood musicals and Tin Pan Alley, and ended with the advent of rock and roll in the 1960s.

Performed by a group of artist/educators who “practice what they preach,” the show features the multi-talented ensemble of Mara Bonde, soprano; David Ripley, bass-baritone; Dan Loschen, piano; Bertram Lehmann, drums; and Rich Appleman, bass.

The show also include two guest performers, young artist Jennifer Sheehan, soprano, a 2007 Juilliard graduate and winner of the Julie Wilson award at the Cabaret Convention in New York three years ago, and pianist Allen Bonde.

“You’re going to hear great music performed by great voices, not Broadway belters,” said Kaufman, a Smith College graduate who majored in music.

“And in between songs they will be talking about the composers, how the song came about, and where it is from whether a movie or nightclub act,” she added.

Sunday’s performance is also a CD release party for Boston Music Theater’s latest recording, “Fly Me
To the Moon – A Tribute to America’s Vocal Legends.” The newly-released compact disc will be available to purchase at the show.

Established in 1976, Boston Musical Theater has been bringing American music to fans in Boston and beyond, including Moscow, Paris, Brussels and Seoul for 30 years. BMT is dedicated to presenting performances of legendary American popular classics with classically trained singers and a jazz trio of music educators from New England colleges and conservatories.”
